Jackie Wu, co-founder and CEO of Corvus Robotics, came up with the idea after observing warehouse operations in 10 countries. Whether he was in Asia, Europe, or the United States, the pattern was the same: massive facilities the size of football fields, shelves climbing four stories high, and people manually logging inventory.
The inefficiency was obvious. So in 2017, Wu decided to apply his graduate training in robotics to solve it. He partnered with co-founder Mohammed Kabir and began a development journey that would take four years before Corvus deployed its first live systems in 2022.

How the Corvus One System Works
At the heart of the platform is the Corvus One Autonomous Inventory Management System, a fleet of fully autonomous micro aerial vehicles that fly without human operators.

Why Indoor Drone Tech Took So Long
Drones in warehouses sound obvious, so why didn’t this exist 10 years ago? The short answer: technology wasn’t ready.
Early UAVs were great for outdoor use in farming, filmmaking, and construction. But indoor environments posed unique problems:

Advances in LiDAR, visual sensors, and AI-based algorithms finally closed the gap. By the early 2020s, indoor drone systems became commercially viable. Market analysts estimate the drone-based warehouse inventory market will grow from $1.2 billion in 2024 to nearly $10 billion by 2033, with a compound annual growth rate above 20 percent.

For companies like GNC, the advantages are tangible. “I like the Corvus Robotics drones because they are out of sight and out of mind,” said Bill Monk, GNC’s vice president of distribution. “They’re doing things that don’t have much value for an individual worker, but for the business, it’s priceless.”

Unlike older inventory systems that require heavy infrastructure and long setup times, Corvus drones can be deployed in just days. For smaller facilities, installation can be done in a single day with one or two engineers.
Once installed, the system is remarkably hands-off. Corvus maintains both the drones and the software, while warehouse staff simply log into the WMS dashboard to search for items or review inventory reports. Historical flight data makes it easy to spot discrepancies and track misplaced products.
Continuous Innovation, Not a “One Big Breakthrough”
Wu emphasizes that the technology was not built on a single breakthrough but on years of solving small, persistent problems.
“There’s not been one magic unlock that just solved everything,” he explained. “It’s been a lot of lead bullets — overcoming issues again and again, some surprising, some mundane, and trusting our engineering team to resolve them.”
By blending open-source software with custom in-house coding, Corvus has created a platform that’s both flexible and proprietary. Its robot-as-a-service model offers subscription-based pricing that scales with facility size and usage, making it more accessible than other partially autonomous or infrastructure-heavy solutions.

As warehouses grow larger and labor shortages persist, the demand for automation is accelerating.
