One perk of being a technology analyst is getting to spend time with devices most consumers have only seen in advertisements. A few weeks ago, Samsung sent me its latest premium foldable smartphone, the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra.
After using it for several weeks, I discovered something more interesting than any individual hardware feature: switching from an iPhone to Android was harder than I expected.
I have been a committed iPhone user for roughly two decades. I know where things are, which gestures to use, how notifications behave, and how to accomplish common tasks without consciously thinking about them.
Then I picked up an Android phone and discovered that knowing how to use a smartphone does not necessarily mean knowing how to use another smartphone operating system.
That experience raises a larger question: Why do people become so attached to iOS or Android?
It is tempting to explain the difference through the familiar idea that some people are “left-brained” — analytical and structured — while others are “right-brained” — visual and intuitive. But modern neuroscience does not support the notion that people can be neatly divided into left-brain and right-brain personalities.
A University of Utah brain-imaging study involving more than 1,000 participants found no evidence that people preferentially use one hemisphere of the brain in the way popular psychology often suggests.
There is no scientific basis for claiming that some people are simply wired for iOS while others are wired for Android.
The explanation is probably much less mysterious: We have spent years learning how our phones work.
iOS and Android Have Trained Us for Nearly 20 Years
The iPhone arrived in 2007, followed by commercial Android smartphones in 2008. That means millions of people have had close to two decades to become deeply familiar with one platform or the other.
Repetition matters.
Longtime smartphone users rarely think consciously about how to return to the home screen, share a photograph, switch applications, respond to a notification, or change a setting. Their fingers simply know what to do.
This is an example of procedural learning. Repeated behaviors become increasingly automatic, requiring less conscious effort over time.
That helps explain the frustration that often accompanies switching platforms.
An experienced iPhone user can pick up an Android phone and discover that virtually everything works — but not necessarily in the way they expect. The phone isn’t incapable of performing a task. The problem is that the path to completing that task violates an established mental model.
The reaction becomes, “Why doesn’t this work the way it should?”
What the user really means is, “Why doesn’t this work the way I’m accustomed to?”
That distinction is critical.
Familiarity Eventually Feels Like Usability
Over the past two decades, iOS and Android have developed their own interface languages.
Users learn where controls are located, what gestures mean, how notifications appear, how applications interact with the operating system, and where settings are buried.
Eventually, those behaviors disappear from conscious thought.
This creates an interesting illusion: familiarity starts to feel like superior usability.
Imagine getting into a car where the accelerator and brake pedals were positioned differently from every car you had previously driven. The arrangement might be perfectly functional. Yet your first reaction would probably be that the car was poorly designed.
Why?
Because your mental model no longer matches the machine.
The same thing happens when an experienced iPhone user moves to Android — or when a longtime Android user moves to iOS.
A 15-year iPhone user may describe iOS as intuitive because it is intuitive to them. But that intuition was not necessarily present on day one. It was developed through thousands of repetitions.
The Android user has undergone the same process in reverse.
This is why arguments about which platform is “easier” can be misleading. People are often comparing a system they have mastered with one they have barely learned.
Ecosystems Make Switching Even Harder
Habit is only part of the problem.
Today’s smartphone is no longer an isolated device. It is the center of a much larger technology ecosystem.
An iPhone owner might also use a Mac, Apple Watch, AirPods, iPad, Apple TV, iCloud, Photos, Messages, FaceTime and a collection of purchased applications.
Switching phones can therefore mean changing an entire workflow.
Android users experience similar ecosystem effects through Google services, Samsung devices, Windows PCs, smart-home products, accessories and applications.
The more deeply a person integrates a smartphone into daily life, the greater the cost of changing platforms.
There is also a practical family dynamic. In many households, one technologically inclined person effectively becomes the family’s informal IT department. That person may prefer everyone use the same platform simply because it makes troubleshooting easier.
Suddenly, smartphone loyalty isn’t merely about personal preference.
It can become a household technology strategy.
That is why asking, “Which phone is better?” increasingly misses the point.
The more relevant question may be:
Which technology ecosystem would I rather live in?
Nobody Likes Becoming a Beginner Again
There is another factor that deserves more attention: people generally don’t like losing competence.
A longtime iPhone user may know iOS almost instinctively. Give that person an Android phone and they suddenly become a beginner.
Settings seem harder to locate. Gestures feel unfamiliar. Notifications behave differently. Menus appear in unexpected places.
None of these differences is necessarily a major flaw.
But smartphone interfaces involve hundreds of tiny interactions. When enough of those interactions become unfamiliar, the cumulative friction can be substantial.
Familiar is easy.
Different is difficult.
And difficult often starts feeling inferior.
That can become particularly powerful because smartphones are personal devices. They contain our photographs, conversations, contacts, purchases, memories and daily routines.
Over time, an operating system can become part of someone’s technology identity.
“I’m an iPhone person.”
“I’m an Android person.”
Those statements can sound like simple product preferences, but they often represent years of accumulated habits and investments.
Foldables Could Reset the Rules
This is where Apple’s expected move into foldable smartphones becomes particularly interesting.
The opportunity isn’t simply to create an iPhone that folds.
The bigger opportunity is to create experiences that conventional smartphones cannot easily reproduce.
For years, the standard smartphone has been designed primarily around viewing and interacting with one application at a time.
A book-style foldable changes that assumption.
With substantially more screen real estate, a phone can become a device for genuinely simultaneous activities.
Imagine placing an email beside a document, watching a video while researching related information, taking notes during a FaceTime call, or editing content on one side of the display while an AI assistant generates or analyzes material on the other.
The lower portion of a foldable could potentially become a keyboard, game controller, editing surface or contextual command panel while the upper display remains dedicated to content.
At that point, the device is no longer simply a larger smartphone.
It becomes a different computing model.
The boundaries between phone, tablet and lightweight PC begin to blur.
Apple’s Software Challenge
Apple has decades of experience designing interfaces across iOS, iPadOS and macOS.
That gives the company an interesting opportunity with a foldable.
Rather than simply scaling up the iPhone interface, Apple could selectively incorporate concepts from the iPad and Mac while maintaining the simplicity expected of an iPhone.
That software experience could ultimately matter more than the folding hardware itself.
Samsung has already demonstrated that foldables can support multiple applications, adaptable windows and sophisticated multitasking.
Apple’s challenge will be making those capabilities feel natural rather than turning the device into something that only power users understand.
If Apple succeeds, its foldable could occupy an entirely new space between the iPhone and iPad.
It would not merely be an expensive smartphone with a hinge.
It could become a new category of personal computer.
Foldables Might Make Switching Easier
There is an intriguing possibility here.
A genuinely new form factor could temporarily make everyone a beginner.
If Samsung and Apple both ask consumers to learn new ways of interacting with a device that transforms from a smartphone into something resembling a small tablet, many of the assumptions users have built around traditional smartphones become less important.
Suddenly, the question isn’t simply whether Android or iOS handles notifications better.
It becomes:
What should a computer do when its screen changes shape?
Samsung can point to Android’s flexibility and its experience with multitasking as advantages.
Apple can argue that its tightly integrated hardware and software allow it to make complex interactions easier to understand.
Both arguments could be valid.
But the competitive landscape changes when consumers begin evaluating the foldable experience rather than simply comparing it with the smartphone experience they already know.
That creates a rare opening for both companies.
New hardware can reset expectations in a way that another conventional annual smartphone upgrade cannot.
The Real Barrier Is Learned Behavior
After nearly 20 years of iOS and Android, the difficulty of switching has very little to do with supposed left-brain or right-brain personalities.
It has much more to do with muscle memory, familiarity, ecosystem investment and the psychological comfort of competence.
Apple and Google haven’t merely created competing operating systems.
They have taught billions of people two slightly different languages for using computers.
Switching platforms is therefore less like buying another phone and more like moving to a country where everyone speaks a dialect you almost understand.
You can communicate.
You can eventually become fluent.
But at first, everything takes a little more effort.
Foldables could disrupt that dynamic.
If both Apple and Samsung create experiences that require users to learn genuinely new ways of interacting with their devices, years of accumulated platform-specific habits may become somewhat less important.
The user who has spent 15 years mastering iOS and the user who has spent 15 years mastering Android could suddenly find themselves learning something new at the same time.
That is a powerful opportunity.
Apple Doesn’t Just Need a Folding iPhone
If Apple simply creates an iPhone that folds, it will have entered an existing product category.
But if Apple develops experiences that are impossible, impractical or significantly less useful on today’s candy-bar smartphones, the company could accomplish something much more important.
It could change what consumers expect from a smartphone.
For nearly two decades, Apple and Google have trained us to think about smartphones in remarkably consistent ways. Foldables offer an opportunity to challenge those assumptions.
The biggest advantage of Apple’s foldable may therefore not be the hinge, the display or even the hardware.
It could be the opportunity to make millions of experienced smartphone users beginners again.
And for the first time in nearly 20 years, that might give longtime iPhone and Android users a compelling reason to learn a new way of computing.
